Solar System

The entire solar system is coming soon to your Earthsim subscription! Over the coming weeks and months we will be adding planets and satellites to the Earthsim Solar System, each complete with tailor-made screensaver paths and documentaries. The first planet added was Mars (at 1 pixel to 2km resolution); Venus and Mars's two moons Phobos and Deimos were added in Earthsim 1.2 whilst Jupiter was added in Earthsim 1.4. Along with Earth's Moon, all these objects can be accessed by Earthsim TV and Online Screensaver subscribers right now. Jupiter will be the next planet to be added.

Please visit our Solar System Image Gallery to see what's in development and what's currently available in Earthsim's Solar System.

Solar System Documentaries on Earthsim TV

Differentiation in the interior of a young planet
Inner Planets Structure
Knowledge of the internal structure of the planets is vital to our deeper understanding of the solar system.
Hellas Planitia: an impact crater on Mars over 6km deep
Mars Surface
After the Earth, Mars has one of the most interesting planetary surfaces in the Solar System. Mainly made of volcanic rock, the ground is red because due to its high levels of iron oxide (rust).
Venus: Earth's sister planet in the solar system
Venus Overview
Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the closest to Earth. It is the brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon, and has been known since prehistoric times.
Matter accreting in a disk around our Sun
Inner Planets Formation
The inner planets were formed gradually by accretion, a process in which smaller particles come together to form ever-larger objects.
Mars's pink atmosphere
Mars Overview
The fourth planet from the sun in our Solar System is Mars: a cold, dry, red world, with average temperatures below freezing and a thin dusty pink-orange atmosphere.
The recently discovered water ice crater on Mars
The Frozen Crater Lake
On the broad plains of Vastitas Borealis in the northern latitudes of Mars, an unnamed impact crater has revealed a fascinating image to the cameras of the European Mars Express probe...

Solar System Documentaries In Development

The following solar system documentaries are scheduled for the next release, but please note that this list may change over time. More information about each documentary will be added to the website as the documentary nears completion.

  • Mars's Moons
  • Moon Overview
  • Inner Planets Formation (upgrade)

Solar System Information Overlays

Earthsim TV subscribers can view solar system objects with a variety of information overlays. The overlays currently available are:

  • Mars topography (altitudes)
  • Mars feature labels and gridlines
  • Moon feature labels and gridlines

We will be introducing entirely new overlays, and adding to our existing overlays. The Moon's topography layer and upgrades for its gridlines are currently in development for the next release, with many more coming soon.
