Earthsim Multi-User Subscriptions

Earthsim For Schools - 1 year, 20 users

Subscribers to Earthsim schools subscriptions get a multi-user account with one main account holder and a number of extra users.

  • The account holder has administrator permission to install and use Earthsim, and can access account information and manage their subscription online.
  • Extra users (e.g. pupils) have limited administrator permissions: they can sign in and use the Earthsim browser once it has been set up on a machine by the account holder, but they cannot access account information.

We suggest the following process for installing and running Earthsim in a school environment:

  • Check that all PCs intended for Earthsim use meet the required specification and that the school's firewall is set up to allow Earthsim traffic. Test this out by first installing the Earthsim browser. Ask the network administrator to open TCP/IP ports 88 (Kerberos), 30002, 30003 and 30004 (Earthsim server use) and UDP/IP port 123 (NTP) if you have connection problems. All Earthsim traffic goes to the domain "earthsim.tv".
  • Once you have a schools subscription, you will receive an email telling you how to install and sign in to the Earthsim browser using the account holder's username & password. If you have already installed the free screensaver, you do not need to reinstall; just run it up as normal and sign in via the main menu in the browser. For example, if your main account name is "teacherJoe", then sign in to the browser using "teacherJoe" as your username.
  • This will enable Earthsim TV content on that PC, and the browser will start downloading the extra documentary content and enable Earthsim TV features.
  • Login to your account on the website and add in one extra (pupil) user using the Manage Subscriptions page. The username & password for this user can be safely distributed to pupils and staff; it allows the extra user to sign in to the Earthsim browser and use Earthsim TV, but it will not work unless the account holder has previously signed in on that PC (e.g. using "teacherJoe") to enable the subscription. We suggest you choose a username & password for the extra user that are easy to remember, as these do not have to be secure.
  • Once you've chosen a name for the extra (pupil) user, note that the full username for the pupil is made up of two parts, of the form <main account name>#<extra user name>. In this example, if you chose "pupil" as the name for the extra user, then the full username for the extra user is "teacherJoe#pupil"; the pupil should use this username to sign in to the Earthsim browser.
  • Any valid username can be used to sign in on up to 20 PCs simultaneously, so the same (pupil) username & password can be used on all 20 PCs, e.g. "teacherJoe#pupil" can be used to sign in on all 20 PCs.
  • The Earthsim browser will remember the last username & password that were used, and automatically sign in using these details each time it is run. Unless you sign out or have a problem with the browser, you will not need to re-enter a username & password each time.
  • If you install the browser on other PCs, you will need to sign in using the account holder's username & password on each PC in order to enable the subscription on that PC and download the Earthsim TV content. Thereafter, the extra user's login details can be used.
  • You can add in more users if you wish, but one is enough to provide a low-security username & password that you can distribute to pupils or staff if they need to sign in to the Earthsim browser.
  • As with the single user account, the browser can be reinstalled on other machines at any time, but reinstalling on more than 40 machines in one day will cause warning messages to appear when you sign in.
